Shinedown definitely have a rewarding hard rock album in them somewhere. It's a confusing song that doesn't do anything for the album's continuity. Elsewhere, "I Dare You" is like a formula and an experiment all in one, suggesting light pop like the Calling even as gritty guitars churn up the reverb. They didn't invent ploddingly urgent post-grunge either, but provided the most recent examples with their string of early-2000s hits. "Save Me" and "Beyond the Sun" are direct descendants of 3 Doors Down. Shinedown have been road-tested, and they prove it again on "Trade Yourself In" and "Yer Majesty." Unfortunately, for most of Us and Them the band still relies too much on formula. Shinedown frontman Brent Smith channels Chris Cornell (or at least Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy) on opener "The Dream," but the song's grunge theft is forgiven by its airtight groove. The quartet played something like 400 shows over the course of 20, and that gelling process is unquestionably a factor in the more realized hard rock sound of the 2005 follow-up, Us and Them. But it became a hit, certainly due in part to radio support, but mostly because of the Jacksonville, FL-based band's reputation as a great live act. The debut LP Leave a Whisper offered more of the same - a satisfactory sound as rock radio filler, but ultimately pretty calculated. Shinedown's 2003 single "Fly from the Inside" blended atmospheric Alice in Chains references with a lumbering post-grunge sound similar to Nickelback. ![]() They have one daughter, Amelia Jane Henson, born in 2005. Then make it a goal to get through a whole afternoon without your mouse. If you've never used a tiling window manager, you owe it to yourself to try at least once. Other window managers like it exist, and some desktops even borrow concepts from this tradition by offering tiling features (KWin in KDE, for example, has an option to spawn new windows in tiles across the desktop). Ratpoison is a great example of an early (but current) tiling window manager. The application that once occupied the frame is sent to the background and can be reached by cycling through the windows as usual ( C-t n, for instance). This doesn't kill the application in the frame, it only removes the frame from your viewport. To remove the top-left frame entirely, use C-t R. To move that application to the top-right frame instead, press C-t Right ( Ctrl with the Right arrow key). The application moves to the bottom half of the screen, with the application that took up the bottom half moving into the top-left. If an application is in the top-left frame, and you want to move it to the lower half of the screen, then-with that application active (use C-t Tab to get there)-press C-t to enter command mode and then C-Down (that's Ctrl with the Down arrow key). For instance, suppose you have a vertical split in the top half of your screen and a single frame in the bottom half. Rearranging frames when Ratpoison has been split into several parts is done with the Ctrl key and a corresponding Arrow key. With at least one application open, you can split the screen horizontally with C-t s (that's a lowercase "s") or vertically with C-t S (that's a capital "S"). To allow that, Ratpoison lets you split your screen into frames or tiles and launch an application within each space. You're free to use Ratpoison as a full-screen viewscreen, but most of us are used to seeing more than one window at a time. To cycle through all open windows, use C-t n for next and C-t p for previous. This is a toggle, like the default (at least in KDE and GNOME) behavior of a quick Alt+Tab. That means you press Ctrl+t once, and then Ctrl+t a second time. Because switching back and forth between two application windows is a pretty common task, Ratpoison assigns it to the same keystroke as your usual Ratpoison command: C-t C-t. That means if urxvt is running, and then you launch Emacs, you can no longer interact with urxvt. ![]() Switching windowsĮach application you launch takes over the entire screen by default. Type the command for the application you want to start and press Return or Enter to launch it. This provides a prompt in the upper-right corner of the screen. To start an arbitrary application in Ratpoison, press C-t and then the ! (exclamation point) symbol. I usually start with Emacs instead, because it has most of the features I use anyway, including the shell terminal and the dired file manager. The default terminal is the humble xterm, and it's available with the C-t c shortcut (I remember the c as being short for "console"). In Ratpoison, your terminal is your exclusive gateway to the rest of the computer because there's no application menu or icons to click. The first application you probably should launch is either Emacs or a terminal. Ratpoison (and GNU Screen and Emacs) more often involve two. This may feel a little unnatural at first, because most of the keyboard shortcuts you're used to probably involve only one action. For instance, to launch an xterm window, press Ctrl+t, just as you would when opening a new tab in a web browser, then press c. Since the C-t shortcut puts you into command mode, it's expected that some other key sequence will follow. To trigger Ratpoison's command mode, you press C-t, which means that you press Ctrl+t. The Control key on your keyboard is written as C. If you're unfamiliar with Emacs or GNU Screen, it can look confusing at first, so here's explicit instruction on how to "decode" this style of notation. Ratpoison documentation uses Emacs-style notation for keyboard controls, so I'll use the same notation in this article. That's all there is to the Ratpoison desktop. The first time you log into Ratpoison, you are greeted by a black screen with some text in the upper-right corner telling you that you can press Ctrl+t for help. ![]() Magnetic Fly Screens for Door Screen Mesh White Curtain Fits for Door.Keeps Flies, Insects, Moths and all kinds of pests out The solution: fly screen curtains with magnetic tape.Such curtains (magnetic curtains) consist of two strips of insect screens, which are attached to the door frame with adhesive tape and held together in the middle with magnetic tape. ![]() Reduced cooling costs by enabling fresh air flow through.Back in 2012, I (Molly Ward, MOSS’ Education Director) was working for the Project WET Foundation. One of my co-workers there was taking what sounded like a very cool class in the evenings through MOSS. I remember asking her about it at the time. Years went by, jobs changed and Katie, my coworker, left Bozeman to pursue a Master’s Degree at Yale. We vaguely stayed in touch via social media enough that I knew she was working on a book. It turns out that book came out in May 2021 and is an amazing collection of art work that grew from idea hatched from nature journaling in MOSS’ Master Naturalist course. I tracked Katie down to sign a copy for me and fill me in on how Master Naturalist led to her becoming a published editor. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? What you do, where you came from, your background and your family? I am an artist, writer, conservationist, and mother. I have lived in the GYE for most of the last decade between Bozeman and Jackson, though am currently based in Boulder, CO. I grew up in Northern Michigan along the shores of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I spent a lot of time outdoors in wild places through my childhood and have continued the tradition here in the Rockies. I am the artist-in-residence at the Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative, which is based in Jackson. I am drawn to interdisciplinary projects that engage communities around shared values in nature. For example, I created the interpretive panels appearing throughout Bozeman’s Story Mill Community Park - painting, writing, and designing the content to appear on each sign in collaboration with local conservation and community partners. I have been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts grants for development of artful interpretive resources in GYE natural areas: Story Mill Park (Bozeman) and Astoria Park Conservancy (Jackson). Much of my art takes the form of intricate wildlife portraits created in watercolor, and my paintings appear in books, galleries, and in natural areas across the country. I have worked for environmental NGOs for most of my career, spanning science, policy, management, education, outreach, and the arts. Through my organization, Coyote Art & Ecology, I have collaborated with such groups as the Trust for Public Land, National Geographic, the WILD Foundation, Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, and AMB West Ranches. I have my Masters from Yale’s School of the Environment, where I co-taught Yale undergrad courses on Yellowstone and Global Change, and traveled with student groups to guide them in exploration and study of the biological, social, and policy contexts of the region. I spend my free time trail running, climbing, hiking, and nature journaling, though these days my explorations keep me in nature closer to home: watching birds with my young son and awaiting a new baby arriving this summer. You took MOSS’ Master Naturalist course several years ago, right? When did you take it and why? #Storymill park free I took MOSS’ Master Naturalist course in 2012 and absolutely loved it. I was seeking the next level of knowing this place, and for that I turned to MOSS.Īt the time, I was still getting my bearings after a somewhat recent move to Bozeman and felt that my own explorations of nature here had been maxed out given my knowledge of this region’s natural history. Can you explain your inspiration for creating The Artist’s Field Guide to Yellowstone and how MOSS’ Master Naturalist course tied into that? I have always been a lover of natural history, but the Northern Rockies is a very different ecology than my childhood home ground of the Northern Great Lakes. I was inspired to create The Artist’s Field Guide to Yellowstone given my love of natural history, my interest in the arts, and my desire to better know my new home, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
